Novel Sunscreen Booster for Chemical and Physical Filters

A sun protection cream or lotion is designed to protect the skin through ultraviolet filters that may be chemical or mineral. Formulation of effective products is limited by many factors including cosmetically appealing skin feel, safety concerns, processing, regulatory constraints, and formulation cost.

Recent research has resulted in a sunscreen booster that will address all of the concerns mentioned above. This booster works in the UVA and UVB ranges, and boosts the protection of both chemical and physical sunscreen actives. Moreover, this technology allows reduction of sunscreen levels up to 4 times, while maintaining desired SPF and increasing protective effects.


Dr. Joy Roederer is Vice President of Research and Development for Integrity Ingredients Corporation, a leader in high quality ingredients and superior customer service. Dr Roederer has expertise in ingredient technologies, and has led product development and technical affairs at major corporations including SC Johnson, BF Goodrich and Guthy-Renker. Joy has been called a strategic thinker, finding solutions that are meaningful, cost effective, and have the potential to build new market opportunities.

Dr. Roederer received her BS Chemistry degree from Texas Lutheran University, and earned her PhD in Analytical Chemistry from Texas A&M University. She has served the SCC as Chair of the Southwest Chapter, Chair of the California Chapter, and Area III Director.

Consistency of Natural, Plant-based Preserverative Ingredients Via Conventional Plant Breeding Technologies

There is an increasing need for natural preservatives to respond to increased consumer demands due to negative media on conventional synthetic preservatives (such as parabens or phenoxyethanol). In response, Kemin has developed an oregano-based ingredient (INCI: Caprylic acid (and) Origanum vulgare (Oregano) Leaf Extract) that is an ECOCERT® and COSMOS® approved powerful natural plant-based preservative. Kemin has developed a proprietary oregano line and utilizes extensive research and proprietary methods to extract beneficial molecules from oregano to offer products that meet the rigid standards of consistency, safety and efficacy.


Brooke Tjaden brings 3 years of experience to the personal care ingredient market. She started her career in Kemin’s Personal Care Division in 2011 as Marketing Coordinator, focusing on market analysis of Kemin Personal Care’s natural, plant-based ingredients for the personal care market. In 2014, she transitioned to Sales Account Representative for Kemin’s Personal Care Division, covering the Upper Midwest & West Coast.

She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing from Drake University.
