Senior Scientist in Skin-Care

Melaleuca, a $1.75B CPG company, is seeking a highly-motivated, creative Senior Scientist to lead innovation in Skin-Care and provide technical support for the line. The position requires strong formulation skills in skin-care technology, including emulsions, gels, and cleansers as well as familiarity with the polymers, surfactants, emollients, active ingredients, and other raw materials used in the cosmetic industry. An understanding of skin physiology and product assessment techniques is desirable. In addition, responsibilities extend to managing external relationships with vendor partners as well as identifying and implementing new technologies and product improvement opportunities from outside sources.

Responsibilities:

• Independently develop experimental designs and work plans in the development of new products to meet desired performance metrics.
• Leads projects and/or people as part of an integrated, cross functional project team. This includes working with marketing counterparts to identify consumer/customer needs and translating these needs into technical specifications.
• Works closely with packaging, process development, and manufacturing during development, and commercialization of relevant products.
• Records detailed observation and data from experiments performed. Keeps lab notebook records current and in good order as a working legal document.
• Plans and schedules project tasks related to laboratory experiments and consumer trials.
• Reports project status to team members and management as required.
• Responsible for planning, interpretation, quality and presentation of data. Reports progress/issues on a timely basis.
• Contributes to the solution of assigned problems through development/modifications of test procedures.
• Keep current in cutting edge chemistry and supplier opportunities to meet customer needs.
• Runs standard and non-standard chemical, physical, or application tests to obtain data to evaluate composition and performance of competitive offerings.
• Assists department staff in lab demonstrations for training programs and customer visits.
• Checks and maintains inventories of raw materials and supplies and maintains work spaces.
• Responsible for safe working conditions (handles dangerous equipment and hazardous chemicals). Is aware of hazards associated with work assigned, observes safe work practices, keeps equipment neat, clean and in safe operating condition, and maintains good housekeeping standards.
• Responsible for following all applicable Federal, State, and Local health, safety, and environmental regulations, as per corporate health, safety and environmental policies.

Requirements:

• Minimum BS degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or related scientific field. An advanced technical degree is desirable.
• 5 – 10 years of previous industrial experience in formulation development of skin-care leave-on and rinse-off products. Laboratory skills in conducting stability studies and product assessment are essential. Supervisory experience is desirable.
• Experience in scale-up from laboratory to manufacturing.
• A track record of driving innovation; New product introductions, Novel product claims, Patents, or Publications.
• Strong team player with excellent communication skills, flexibility, and the ability to multitask.
